Chinese defence minister in Nepal for military cooperation

New Delhi, Nov 29 (UNI) China's State Councillor and Defence Minister Wei Fenghe landed in Kathmandu on Sunday to boost military cooperation with Nepal -- notably a day after India's foreign secretary Harsh Vadhan Shringla had a successful "charm offensive" trip to the Himalayan republic.
Gen Wei on arrival said that his visit to Nepal was aimed at implementing bilateral agreements reached between the two countries.
“My visit is aimed at enhancing mutual military assistance and strengthening the existing ties between the two countries,” Nepal's national news agency Rastriya Samachar Samiti quoted Wei as saying.
"Ties between China and Nepal are strong and I am here to take this relationship to a new height," he said.
The two countries are likely to sign a protocol on implementing a 150 million RMB military assistance that they have agreed upon during Deputy Prime Minister Ishwar Pokhrel’s visit to China last year. Pokhrel was defence minister then.
“I am confident about having a result-oriented visit,” said Wei.
The high-level visit of Wei comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping came to Nepal in October last year.
Wei had earlier said that China "thinks highly of the firm support from Nepal on issues involving China's core interests."
During his day-long stay in Kathmandu, Wei will call on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is also the defence minister.
Wei will hold talks with Army Chief General Purna Chandra Thapa, Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday while announcing the visit.
"Discussion on the resumption of Chinese military aid will figure during the meeting,” said Army Spokesperson S B Paudyal, reports Kathmandu Post.
Significantly, Wei's visit is taking place at a time when the ruling Nepal Communist Party is mired in an internal conflict and Beijing has not concealed its concern over the goings-on in the party.
Chinese Ambassador Hou Yanqi recently held meetings with ruling party chairs Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
Back in July too, when the ruling party was in crisis, staring at an imminent split, the ambassador had held a meeting with senior leaders of the party.
