The burnt body of the deceased was found at the house of the farmer, which he used to stack his stubble, on the outskirts of the village.
Although police are yet to ascertain the cause of the farmer, but the family members have accused four people of the village, alleging that the farmer was murdered following an old enmity and a land dispute.
According to trans-Ganga SP Dhawal Jaiswal, “The deceased Harishchandra Sharma was a resident of Tejupur village was into farming. He was also an addict to different intoxicants and drugs too. He had built a small house on the leased land in the outskirts of the village while the rest of the family used to live in the old house, within the village”.
The villagers saw the house burning at around 3am on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday and informed the fire brigade. After the fire was doused, villagers found the burnt corpse of Sharma laying in the middle of the burnt stubble.
“Although we are still probing the cause of the fire as the deceased had a history of addiction and it could be that the stubble has incidentally caught fire. But, as the family members have accused some persons of murdering Sharma, we have arrested few people and interrogating them,” said Jaiswal.
However, we are probing all aspects, and nothing can be said until the post-mortem report comes, he added.
