Proteas batsman Faf du Plessis was impressed with debutant George Linde after his performance in the opening T20 loss against England.

Linde had a memorable debut at Newlands on Friday as the all-rounder picked up a wicket off his second ball in international T20 cricket.

The 28-year-old ended with 2/20 in his four overs and also had a short cameo with the bat, scoring 12 off 6 balls (included a six and a four).

Linde, who made his Test debut last year against India, finished as SA's best-performing bowler as the Proteas lost by five-wickets in the first of three T20s.

Du Plessis, who scored 58 off 40 balls on Friday, stated that he was pleased to see how Linde adapted to playing against the 2019 World Cup champions.

"A couple of things for me stand out tonight about George. The fact that he does bat a bit is probably the reason he got the nod today, just to try and make our batting line-up a bit longer," Du Plessis told reporters on Friday.

"What I was really pleased seeing today was someone who hasn't bowled a lot with the new ball in T20 cricket, when Quinny (de Kock) asked him to bowl that first over, he did that beautifully. It just showed that he's got a good head on his shoulders, good composure and that he can bowl at any time of the innings.

"It's great to see that South Africa keeps producing young talent coming through who perform when they are given an opportunity."

The second T20 at Boland Park starts at 14:30 on Sunday.
