Charge-sheet to be filed in Anvay Naik suicide case: Anil Deshmukh

Charge-sheet to be filed in Anvay Naik suicide case: Anil Deshmukh

Nagpur, Nov 28 (UNI) The Maharashtra government will very soon file the chargesheet against Republic TV Editor-in-Arnab Goswami in the architect-interior designer Anvay Naik suicide case , in which journalist Arnab Goswami is an accused.

This was announced by Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Saturday. Besides Goswami, two others are also accused of abetting the suicide of Naik and his mother in 2018.

While speaking to reporters here , Mr Deshmukh said that the investigation into the Anvay Naik suicide case was still going on and very soon a charge sheet would be filed in the case only after getting permission from the court.

The statement from Maharashtra Home Minister came a day after the Supreme Court extended the interim bail of Goswami and two others for four weeks, stating that the judiciary should ensure that criminal law does not become a weapon for selective harassment.

It also said that prima facie evaluation of the FIR against Goswami and two others did not establish the ingredients of the offence of abatement to suicide.

Arnab Goswami, Neetish Sarda and Feroz Mohammad Shaikh were arrested by Alibaug police in Maharashtra's Raigad district on November 4 in connection with the case. Goswami walked out of Taloja jail on November 11 after the apex court granted him interim bail.

The HM also said that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray does not need to tender an apology as demanded by the opposition after court verdicts in cases related to Goswami and actor Kangana Ranaut on Friday as the observations made by the courts were not related to the state government. The decision of the court regarding the Kangana Ranaut case is related to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and not to the state government and hence, there is no need for the CM or the home minister to offer an apology.

It must be mentioned here that the case concerns the death of Anvay Naik, managing director of Concorde Designs Private Limited, in 2018. A suicide note by Naik accused Goswami and two others - Feroz Shaikh and Neetish Sarda of not paying dues worth Rs 5.40 crore. Naik and his mother Kumud Naik were found dead in their home in Kavir village of Alibaug.

Anvay Naik was found hanging on the first floor, while Kumud’s body was found by the police on the ground floor. During the investigation in this case, it was found by police that Anvay was in heavy debt and was finding it very difficult to repay money to contractors.
