Please Explain podcast: Transnational effort behind release of Kylie Moore-Gilbert from Iran
After two years of detention in Iran, Australian-British academic Kylie Moore-Gilbert has been released to Australia.
Dr Moore-Gilbert worked as a lecturer in Islamic studies at the University of Melbourne and was arrested in September 2018 while trying to depart Tehran after attending an educational conference.
She was later convicted of espionage and sentenced to 10 years in prison despite vehemently denying all charges. 804 days later, her freedom was secured in exchange for the release of Iranian prisoners held in Thailand.
In this episode, national editor Tory Maguire and national security and foreign affairs correspondent Anthony Galloway talk about Dr Moore-Gilbert's arrest, release and what it means for Australia's relationship with Iran.
