The last Nagarjun Vesh of the lords was performed 26 years back in 1994.
The temple doors were opened at 2.45 AM. The Vesha prepared by servitors at Chakrakot in Harchandi Sahi was consecrated by pundits and brought in a procession of servitors, musicians playing Ghantaa, cymbals and mridangam in tight security to the temple.
The procession reached the temple gate at 3.45 AM.
In the sanctum, Sanctorum priests performed Mangal arati followed by Mailum, Tadaplagi and Abakash. Thereafter Gopal bhog was offered.
Vesha began by 4.45 AM. Three sets of Simhari and Puspalak servitors began dressing the deities simultaneously which was completed by 10.45 AM. It took about four hours to complete.
Apart from the Vesha prepared by the servitor gold and other ornaments were used from the temple treasury.
Ramchandra Dasmahapatra the temple managing body member said since Dussera the servitor authorities had begun preparing the Vesha using traditional ingredients.
The vesha began about three hours late, he said. While the temple schedule stated that Vesha would begin by 4 AM and completed by 7 AM but it began at 4.45 AM and completed at 10.15 AM, Mr Dasmahapatra said.
The servitors and priests performed all the nitees and rituals of the deities in absence of devotees.
Only servitors were allowed to have darshan of the Vesha.
Hundreds of devotees had darshan of Patitapaban, the image of Lord Jagannath from a distance this morning.
Twenty-five platoons of police personnel along with two additional SPs and seven DSPs were deployed in a four-layer security cover around the Meghnad Prachir and along the Badadanda and up to Marichikot chhak.
Prohibitory order under Section 144 of CrPc was clamped around the temple and on the Badadanda.
