CoMSO stages protest to demand ILP in Meghalaya

Shillong, Nov 27 (UNI) The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO), a conglomerate of several organisations, staged a protest on Friday demanding immediate implementation of Inner Line Permit and repeal of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
CoMSO, hoisted banners and black flags in different parts of the State urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to implement the ILP without further delay in the entire Meghalaya.
“Conrad Sangma prove yourself that you can lead Meghalaya to ILP regime…if not please step down,” “Amitji Modiji in Meghalaya we need ILP,” “Yes ILP, no CAA,” were some of the banners hoisted.
The banners also denounced the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and stated that ILP is the mechanism that can protect the interest of the indigenous people of Meghalaya.
Recently, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had met Home Minister Amit Shah and impressed upon him on the need to implement ILP in Meghalaya. He also reminded about the resolution passed by the State Assembly.
However, the central government has said that it’s examining the matter.
The powerful Khasi Student’s Union, which has been demanding for implementation of ILP in Meghalaya for several decades now, has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking for his intervention to implement the ILP in the State.
Lamphrang Kharbani, whose organisation Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement is part of the CoMSO, said that the Centre should respect the resolution passed by the State Assembly which has sought for the implementation of the ILP in the State.
“The Centre should respect the sentiments and the aspirations of the people of the State and implement the ILP in Meghalaya,” Kharbani said, adding that if the Centre can implement the ILP in Manipur why the same rule can’t apply in Meghalaya.
He also said all the 60 MLAs in the State should collectively demand from the Centre to implement the ILP.
The HNAM president further added that the two BJP MLAs (AL Hek and Sanbor Shullai) should seek their party’s help in implementing the ILP.
He said that the black flag and banners were hoisted to remind the Centre that the people are waiting for the implementation of the ILP.
“If the Government doesn’t respond to our demand we would intensify our agitation after December 4,” Kharbani said.
