1st ODI, SCG, Sydney, 27 Nov, 2020
A valiant effort from Pandya to chase 375 but too many wickets in the first 10 overs cost India as Australia register a thumping victory by 66 runs. Australia have played India 18 times at the SCG in ODIs. The hosts have only lost twice.
Top Scorers:
Finch 114(124)
Smith 105(66)
Hazlewood 55/3
Zampa 54/4
Starc yorks Shami to ping the base of off stump. Not a great day with the ball for Starc today. This should help. Cracking delivery from round the wicket, with a bit of reverse too. IND- 308/8
Shami goes after Maxwell and 15 runs come off the over. Score after 47 overs | IND 297-7
With the loss of Dhawan and Pandya, Australia look set for a comfortable win. Playing as a specialist batsman today and did he do a good job or what! That was a valiant innings from Hardik Pandya. Unfortunately a tall ask and it doesn't look like it'll suffice. India 256/6 after 42 overs
Hardik Pandya, out Caught by Starc!! Zampa with the wicket that probably kills this game. After refusing to flight the ball to Pandya in his last couple of overs, he dangles one up. Expectedly, Pandya goes after it and for a moment it looks like he's got it nice and clean. But it goes only as far as Starc, who has stationed himself calmly at the edge of the long-on boundary. He waits for it. The crowd hold their breath. And he gobbles it. Pandya falls 10 short of a maiden ODI ton. And India are pretty much sure to fall short of this record chase. Hardik Pandya c Starc b Zampa 90(76)
Caught by Starc!! Zampa has broken through. He has done so by asking Dhawan to go over the field on the off-side. Mid-off is in the ring here. And Dhawan probably doesn't want to leave all the attacking on Pandya's shoulders.
With the innings nearing the 30-over mark, Pandya (75*) gets on with the task of accelerating it. After hitting Starc for two boundaries, he takes on the incoming Hazlewood and pulls him for another four. Dhawan's on 59*. IND: 208/4 (30 overs)
Despite India building a strong partnership between Dhawan (58*) and Pandya (58*), Australia haven't withered away. Stoinis and Starc keep their concentration levels high and put pressure on the batsmen. Ten runs off the last three overs. IND: 190/4 (28 overs)
After an economical Stoinis over, Dhawan (53*) now reaches his fifty just like his batting partner. He takes on Starc and after Cummins drops a catch, the ball bounces just in front and escapes to the boundary. Seven runs off the over. IND: 180/4 (25 overs)
A 31-ball half-century for Hardik Pandya. He's giving India a glimpse of hope in this tall chase India - 169/4 (23 ovs), need 206 from 162 balls
Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan aiming to build a strong partnership. Fifty-run stand between Hardik and Dhawan, but India are still a long way away. Score after 20 overs | IND 144-4
15 overs gone, India 109/4 with Hardik Pandya 2* and Shikhar Dhawan is 36 off 35 balls. India still have a mountain to climb. Still, 35 overs left why is the hurry to hit big shots? Couldn't India play 1s and 2s till 35 overs without fall of wickets and then try to finish like a T20?
With still 273 runs required, India having a tough time as KL Rahul gone for 12 off 15 balls. In last five overs, India have lost 3 wickets for 27 runs. Hardik Pandya is in.
Hazelwood goes off after a match-winning spell and Adam Zampa is in.KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan are at the middle. Indian batsmen are clearly struggling against short balls. From Virat Kohli to Shreyas Iyer, Indians risk losing wickets.
Two wickets in three balls for Hazelwood. Hazlewood to Shreyas Iyer, out Caught by Carey!! What on earth was that from Shreyas Iyer? This was a bouncer, but he didn't get his bat down after opting late to let it go
In a Kohli-Hazlewood duel, Indian skipper falls. Catch taken by Aaron Finch at short mid-wicket. Hazlewood roars. Again shows how shrewd he is. He saw Kohli run down the pitch and banged this short ball in a place where Kohli had no room to free the arms, looked like he took some pace off too, Kohli went through with the pull despite not being in a great position and found his counterpart. Credit to Australia for have a catcher there.
Look at the swag after playing that flick shot. The pose tells you he knew he middled that so well. The pace on the ball is also life easy for batsmen when the line isn't right. Short and leg-sidish, brilliant bottom-handed flick over backward square leg.
Virat Kohli's bat took a top edge and an unforgettable moment for Indian fans. Adam Zampa has put it down. Too much RCB loyalty? Short delivery that rose on Kohli, batsman doesn't hold back and tries to hook, thick edge, went really high, Zampa had it covered at fine leg, went the reverse cup style and it burst through as he didn't close the hands in time. It may cosy dear for Aussies.
Meanwhile, a couple of protestors had invaded the ground and the security were seen running after them at the end of the sixth over of Australian innings.
