Kolkata, Nov 27 (UNI) Ahead of crucial 2021 Assembly election, West Bengal Transport Minister and senior Trinamool Congress leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday resigned as Minister from the Mamata Banerjee Government.

Adhikari also resigned from the post of Hooghly River Bridge Commission (HRBC) Chairman yesterday.

In his resignation letter, Adhikari said, " I do hereby tender my resignation from my office as minister. Steps may be taken for its immediate acceptance. ”

“ I thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve the people of the State, which I did all through with a commitment, dedication and sincerity, " he wrote in his resignation letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar tweeted, " Today at 1:05 pm a resignation letter of Mr. Suvendu Adhikari from office as minister addressed to Hon’ble Chief Minister has been forwarded to me. "

" The issue will be addressed from constitutional perspective, " he said.

" Ministers are appointed by the Governor under Article 164 of the Constitution on the advice of the Chief Minister, " he said.

" Mr. Suvendu Adhikari resignation as minister @MamataOfficial has been forwarded to me for information. There will be adherence to due constitutional process, " he further said.

Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee was appointed as HRBC Chairman by the West Bengal government.

The party’s senior leadership had several rounds of talks with Adhikary in the recent past.

Over the past couple of weeks, senior leaders of the party, including MP Sougata Roy, met Adhikary twice and discussed the differences in order to come to a solution.

Earlier, Trinamool’s political advisor Prashant Kishor also called on Adhikari to bring the matter to a favourable solution.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh reacting to the resignation said it marked the "beginning of end" of the Trinamool Congress.
