Increased awareness, willingness to shift to cyclone shelters and expeditious action by officials resulted in zero human casualty during Cyclone Nivar when it crossed Vellore district in the early hours of Thursday.

Vellore: Integrated Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts continued to receive heavy rain on Thursday with the Palar, Agaram and Naganadhi rivers flowing bank to bank. At Othyathur the Naganadhi overflowed the low-level bridge resulting if officials barricading both ends to prevent use by the public. Collector A Shanmuga Sundaram said standing banana plantations were destroyed in 14 acres, while 15 trees and 4 EB poles were blown over by the heavy wind. a total of 474 persons were accommodated in 16 relief camps. However, the rain was not enough as only 76 irrigation tanks of the 101 in the district were still empty.
