In an exclusive interview with BollywoodLife, legendary singer Kumar Sanu opens up about daughter Shannon K making a mark in Hollywood, revisits his stellar career and the impact his songs have had in the country, fondly reminisces the initial comparisons with Kishore Kumar, talks about the varied music directors who played a hand in his journey, gets nostalgic about singing all types of songs and everybody wanting to work with him back in the day
“Every singer needs to have this trait, we all follow somebody or another and enter the industry, and then forge our identity. All the big singers have done it. You can take all the good qualities of the senior singers who inspire you and add your new qualities to them, and that's what I tried doing. I used to sing all of Kishoreda's songs for T-Series, Gulshan Kumar would get me to sing them, and a lot of talk went around about how I used to sing in his voice. And them, when I got the opportunity to sing my first song, Tere Hum Ae Sanam for the film, Jeena Teri Gali Mein, aap dekhoge toh usme total jhalak Kishorda ka tha. Jurm (1990) aur Jaadugar (1989) mein bhi tha, jab Amitabhji (Amitabh Bachchan) ke liye gaya tha, uss samay bhi Kishoreda ka poora jhalak tha,” narrated Kumar Sanu when we had asked him about initial comparisons with another iconic singer, Kishore Kumar.
“However, when Aashiqui came, I tried to bring my own style to the song, Gulshanji gave me the chance to prove my talent, and people liked it. Definitely the style that I learned from Kishoreda always remained, taking something good from someone is never a bad thing, but from Aashiqui onward I've always tried to add my creativity to it,” narrated Kumar Sanuji when we had asked him about initial comparisons with another iconic singer,” added Kumar Sanuji about how he broke away from the mold.
