
Cyclone in Chennai, Tamil Nadu Live Updates: Cyclone Nivar has made landfall and crossed Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts as a very severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 120 kilometres to 130 kilometres. Heavy rainfall continues in several parts of Tamil Nadu. Chennai International Airport still remains closed.
IMD-Chennai sounded Red Alert from extremely heavy rainfall in seven districts and orange alert in the districts located in northern Tamil Nadu. Incessant rain has lashed the Tamil Nadu capital. Chennai/Meenambakkam has received 120 mm rainfall from 8.30 am on Tuesday till 5.30 am today, as per details shared by IMD. Flights have been cancelled, bus services will be affected. South Western Railway has fully or partially cancelled a few trains.
IMD-Hyderabad in its forecast said that thunderstorms along with lightning will occur at isolated places. Heavy rainfall in 13 districts today. IMD-Bengaluru has predicted in the capital city of Karnataka today.

In view of the cyclone, a prohibitory order that has been in force here since November 24 to prevent movement of people and also gathering was lifted on Thursday. Rescinding the order imposed under section 144 CrPC, District Magistrate Purva Garg said preliminary assessment ofcyclone-related evacuation, rescue and relief work was undertaken by the territorial administration, and there was no loss of life or major damage reported from anywhere in the Union Territory. The prohibitory order, enforced till 6 am today since November 24, has been rescinded, she said. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, in her voice message to the people of Puducherry, thanked them for their cooperation because of which the administration was able to tide over the cyclone and ensure safety to life and property. Reports from District Collectors of Puducherry and Karaikal said except for the fall of the trees, there was no damage to properties. 'I thank the Centre too for deploying NDRF to help the territorial government rise to any exigency during the cyclone along with the India Reserve Battalion, a standby police force, to rise to any exigency,' said Bedi. Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner A Anbarasu told PTI that normalcy has returned to Puducherry and there has been no damage to property or loss of life. He said wherever there was disruption in power supply, it was being restored without loss of time. State Revenue Minister R B Udhayakumar said. there were no reports of loss of life or crop damage. "There is no loss of lives due to the rains. People have given us full cooperation," he said. Incidents of wall collapse were reported from a few places, he said. "It's a solace that nothing untoward happened and the weakening of the cyclone is good news," he said. The minister said about 2.5 lakh people were housed in cyclone shelters in Tamil Nadu as part of safety measures. According to the inputs received so far, crops and groves are safe in the state, Udhayakumar was quoted as saying by PTI.

Cyclonic storm Nivar is just about 80 km away from east-southeast of Cuddalore and about 85 km east southeast of Puducherry, said the latest update from IMD, as reported by ANI. The MeT department said Nivar is very likely to cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram during mid-night of November.

The Puducherry government on Wednesday declared Thursday as a public holiday for departments and educational institutions, PTI reported. The administration has already declared Wednesday as a holiday due to cyclone Nivar.
