The chief executive of the mobile industry lobby group, Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association, Chris Althaus, has stepped down after 15 years in the role following the organisation's annual general body meeting which was held on Thursday.

TPG Telecom group executive Wholesale, Dan Lloyd, was elected as the chairman and an executive search has begun to find a replacement for Althaus.

Ericsson Australia and New Zealand chief executive Emilio Romeo, Optus director Economic Regulation and Regulatory and Public Affairs, Luke van Hooft, and Motorola APAC Sales general manager Danny Adamopoulos were re-elected as directors.

The other directors are Dan Lloyd, Telstra External Affairs and Legal Network and Technology Regulation Principal Sustainability, Brian Miller, Nokia Oceania Market Unit head Anna Wills, Axicom chief executive Michael Riches, Samsung Electronics Government and Policy director Marc Dunn and ZTE Australia managing director Daniel Zhao.

"I am delighted to be re-elected chair of AMTA given the importance of the mobile industry to Australia," said Lloyd.

"While we are clearly disappointed to hear of Chris's intention to step down as CEO in early 2021, Chris has given 15 years of excellent service to the industry and leaves the industry and AMTA in a very strong position.

"Although Chris won't be leaving until next year, I would like to take the opportunity to formally thank him for his outstanding contribution. We will shortly be commencing a recruitment process for the challenging task of a replacement."

Althaus said: "It has been a privilege to represent AMTA's members and the broader sector through the rollout of three generations of mobile technology in Australia.

"It is a source of great satisfaction that as I prepare to conclude my role with AMTA, the mobile telecommunications industry is well placed to ensure Australians understand and appreciate the enormous potential that continues to be presented by the latest generation of mobile in this country.

"I have worked with, and met, a diverse and fascinating group of people and without question my industry colleagues have been a constant source of advice and friendship.

"Most particularly, the AMTA board members have provided invaluable wise counsel over the years. To the AMTA staff – you are the best and it has been my pleasure to work with you. I am very proud of AMTA, its role, standing, and contribution and this goes to reflect a great industry."

Now’s the Time for 400G Migration

The optical fibre community is anxiously awaiting the benefits that 400G capacity per wavelength will bring to existing and future fibre optic networks.

Nearly every business wants to leverage the latest in digital offerings to remain competitive in their respective markets and to provide support for fast and ever-increasing demands for data capacity. 400G is the answer.

Initial challenges are associated with supporting such project and upgrades to fulfil the promise of higher-capacity transport.

The foundation of optical networking infrastructure includes coherent optical transceivers and digital signal processing (DSP), mux/demux, ROADM, and optical amplifiers, all of which must be able to support 400G capacity.

With today’s proprietary power-hungry and high cost transceivers and DSP, how is migration to 400G networks going to be a viable option?

PacketLight's next-generation standardised solutions may be the answer. Click below to read the full article.
