India vs Australia ODI series: Will history repeat itself?
Even when the last time the two teams met for a three-match ODI series in January 2020, the duo dismantled India’s bowling line-up while creating many records.
In the series opener, chasing India’s 255, Warner and Finch smashed unbeaten hundreds to consign the hosts to a 10-wicket loss in Mumbai. They stitched an unbeaten partnership of 258 runs which happens to be the largest partnership against India in one-day cricket, for any wicket anywhere in the world. The previous highest was 242 between George Bailey and Steven Smith at Perth in 2016.
Also, it was the 3rd-highest partnership for Australia in ODIs with Warner being part of all three of them.
Moreover, as Warner and Finch combined to hit a hundred each, it marked the first-ever instance when an opening pair did so in a chase against India. For Australia, it was only the 2nd such instance of both openers scoring hundreds in a run-pursuit and 5th overall.
India vs Australia ODI series: Finch, Warner aiming for records
Meanwhile, the Australian openers will be eyeing numerous records against India when they face off in the upcoming ODI series.
- Warner is 162 shy of registering 1,000 career ODI runs against India.
- He could become the 10th Aussie batsman to achieve this mark.
- If he achieves this milestone, then Warner will surpass the likes of former Aussie internationals Michael Clarke (858), Geoff Marsh (943) and Mark Waugh (974) in terms of career ODI runs against India.
- Also, the southpaw has hit 87 fours against them. He needs another 13 to register a mark of 100. He could become only the fifth Australian to achieve this milestone against Kohli and co.
- On the other hand, Finch needs two more runs to get past David Boon’s tally of 1212 runs.
- He has hit 26 sixes against India and needs seven more to surpass the legendary Ricky Ponting (32).
India vs Australia ODI series: Warner focussed on maintaining a strong strike rate
Warner said at 34, he has become a calculated risk-taker and is focussed on maintaining a strong strike rate.
“For myself, it’s about getting off to a good start and taking calculated risks in that middle-overs period if we’re talking about 50-over games,” he said.
“For me, it’s about making sure that I am batting as much as I can and at a good strike-rate as well. I think last year was probably the most disciplined I’ve batted in Test match cricket as well.
“I really took pride in the last 12-24 months, to apply that discipline and you keep learning as you get older…You’ve got to be on top of your game to be able to adapt to that.”
