The International Telecommunications Union has adopted the radio interface standards for 5G as part of its IMT-2000 recommendation. The standards are the 3GPP 5G-SRIT and 3GPP 5G-RIT from the 3GPP and 5Gi from the Telecommunications Standards Development Society India.
These technologies were deemed to be sufficiently detailed to enable worldwide compatibility of operation and equipment, including roaming. As a result, they form the first release of IMT-2020, an ITU-R Recommendation titled 'Detailed specifications of the radio interfaces of IMT-2020'.
The evaluation of the candidate technologies was not carried out by ITU-R alone. The ITU said it was a "highly collaborative process with substantial input" from the ITU member states, equipment manufacturers, network operators and national, regional and international standards organizations and the academic community.
The path towards a global 5G standard was started by the ITU in early 2012, followed by the adoption of the IMT-2020 name and vision in 2015.
