The Indian Super League (ISL 2020-21) will mark the return of major league competition in India after the nationwide lockdown to prevent the COVID-19 outbreak was first imposed in March.
Last season's runners-up, Chennaiyin FC beat Jamshedpur FC by 2-1 on Tuesday. Chennaiyin midfielder Anirudh Thapa scored the fastest goal of the season after 52 seconds while Esmael Goncalves doubled the lead with a 26th minute penalty. Last season's Golden Boot winner Nerijus Valskis pulled one back for JFC in the 37th minute header but it was not enough for Owen Coyle's men. The win took Chennaiyin to the top of the league, while Jamshedpur is bottom of the table.
The tournament, spanning over four months, will see 11 teams play each other in a double round-robin format across three venues. Following SC East Bengal's inclusion, this season will feature 115 games, up from 95 last season.
