JAMMU: Commonwealth championship medalist Shreya Gupta received the Sher-i-Kashmir Sports Award for excellence in sports for the year 2017-18.
In a simple ceremony due to COVID restrictions, this prestigious award was given to her by managers of J&K Sports Council S.P Singh and Satish Gupta at MA Stadium. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 50,000, a memento and a sports outfit.
Shreya was conferred this award in January, 2019 for her excellent achievements for the country and J&K UT in the game of Fencing.
She has also been conferred with State award in 2019 and expecting to get it in the near future. She was honoured with the Rangil Singh Award by J&K Olympic Association for Sports Excellence for the year 2017-2018.
Shreya has been National Champion for six times in different categories and also current National Champion in Junior and Cadet category.
She has the distinction of bagging Best player Trophy in National Fencing Championship at Gwalior and winning National Cadet Gold three times in a row.
She owes her achievements and successes to coaches Shotu Lal Sharma, Rashid Ahmed Choudhary, Ujwal Gupta and Rachna Jamwal.
Shreya is especially thankful for all the time support of J&K Amateur Fencing Association and Secretary J&K Sports Council Naseem Javid Choudhary besides supportive parents. Last but not the least without the personal support and initiative of J&K UT LG, this long awaited award would not have been possible.
