Cyclone Nivar update: Severe cyclonic storm Nivar is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Chennai when it makes landfall between Mamallapuram (which is 56 km from Chennai) in Tamil Nadu and Karaikal in Puducherry today. The IMD said a storm surge of about two metres above the sea level was likely around the time of landfall, causing inundation of low-lying areas. Cyclone Nivar would bring winds between 120 and 130 km per hour, with gusts of up to 145 km per hour, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai advised, adding that coastal areas could receive heavy rains till Thursday. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted to assure the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments of all possible support.
