Chatra: A group of villagers who took the responsibility to look after a nilgai at Daha village of Hunterganj block of Chatra killed the animal and ate its meat, said forest officials on Tuesday.
On Saturday, the nilgai fell into a trench and injured itself. Foresters, along with villagers, rescued the animal and after initial treatment, the villagers were asked to look after the nilgai for a few days. However, on Monday, forest officials came to know that the animal was killed and its meat eaten.
Forester Pawan Kumar confirmed the incident and said, “A probe has been ordered today (Tuesday).”
This is not the first instance of villagers killing wild animals for their meat. Chatra is known for presence of deer in large numbers and reports about killings surface from time-to-time. This year in February, a few forest employees had killed a deer for its meat.
