Western Province assistant coach Rito Hlungwani has responded to Bulls mentor Jake White's comments comparing the Pretoria franchise to the giants of English soccer.

After his side secured the Super Rugby Unlocked title over the weekend, White told reporters: "I signed at this franchise on the basis that it's a sleeping giant. The Bulls are the Liverpool or Manchester United of rugby.

"When you look at the teams around the world, I'd say we're up there with the best. At the end of the day, if you went to the top five or six rugby clubs in the world, the Bulls would be one of them."

White's charges open their Currie Cup campaign against Western Province at Newlands on Saturday and the cape side's forwards guru was asked what he thought of White's comments.

Hlungwani chuckled, before adding: "I do like a bit of soccer myself, I would say Western Province is the Orlando Pirates... it must be nice for them to be compared to Liverpool who struggled to win anything for the past 30 years but it must still be an honour for them... Liverpool have a great coch in Jurgen Klopp."
