Odisha Crime Branch to investigate abduction and murder of five-year-old girl: Minister

(rpt, correcting date)
Bhubaneswar, Nov 25 (UNI) The Crime Branch of Odisha police will investigate the abduction and murder of a five-year-old girl at Jadupur village in Nayagarha district in July last, Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra told the Assembly today.
Mr Mishra announced the CB inquiry while making a statement in the house following a direction from Speaker S N Patro.
The Speaker’s direction came in the wake of hue and cry in the house by the Opposition BJP and Congress members over the murder of the minor girl whose parents attempted self-immolation bid before the State Assembly on Tuesday alleging police inaction in apprehending the accused.
The Minister said the Odisha government has decided to hand over the investigation of the alleged murder of the five-year-old girl. The Crime branch, he said will inquire into the case and take appropriate action as per law.
He said polygraph tests of four people had been done in SFSl Bhubaneswar and call records of all suspects were analysed and the financial transactions of the suspects in various banks in Nayagarh district also examined.
As many as 34 suspects were interrogated in connection with the case, Mr Mishra said, adding that Nayagarh SDPO is now inquiring into the case and it is now under investigation.
The couple who attempted self-immolation over the police inaction in the murder of their daughter alleged that despite their repeated appeals the police did not take any action to arrest the accused since a Cabinet Minister was shielding him.
The minister in his statement said one Ashok Sahu and his wife Soudamini wrapped in shawls tried to pour kerosene on themselves in front of the state Assembly at around 1045 hours but the security personnel present at the spot whisked them into the capital hospital outpost.
During interrogation, the couple said they had filed a report about the missing of their daughter with the Nayagarh Sadar Police station on July 14 last.
Later a case was registered under different sections of IPC. The investigation of the case was handed over to a SI. On July 23 the complainant found the decomposed body of the daughter packed in a sack in the backyard of their house.
Mr Mishra said the circumstantial evidence indicated that the girl was abducted and murdered. Accordingly, a fresh case was registered u/s 363; 364, 302 and 201of the IPC.
The inquest was made in the presence of Tahasildar B Sahu, family members and other witnesses. The body was sent to SCB Medical College, Cuttack for post-mortem.
The medical team in their report said the body appears to have a female child of 5 to 6 years. Sexual abuse and cause of death, however, could not be determined as the body was decomposed.
Later, a DNA test confirmed that she was the daughter of the complainant, the Minister said.
