Capital sees Covid surge, skips curfew

Gandhinagar has managed 1,000 Covid beds in govt and private hospitals
In the first week of November, total Covid cases were 226 which shot to 244 in second week, by the third week, it was 350
The spike in Covid cases across the State has forced the government to impose night curfew inmajor cities like Ahmedabad, Rajkot , Vadodara, and Surat. However, capital Gandhinagar which is home to ministers and bureaucrats has been spared despite registering a Covid surge post-Diwali .
Before Diwali, the capital's daily Covid figure remained between 30 to 40 cases. Since then, the area underGandhinagar Municipal Corporation has witnessed more than 50 cases every day upto November 22. Meanwhile, cases in the entire district has almost doubled.
Officials blame the rise in figures to frenzied Diwali shopping and people who travelled outside. Agreeing with this, Gandhinagar Collector Kuldeep Arya said, "In the first week of November, total Covid cases were 226 which shot to 244 in the second week, By the third week, it was 350."
He added, "Another major reason for increase in cases is our massive sampling. We also have an alert surveillance system which keeps collecting data from different sources like medical stores to see who all are suffering from fever and other ailments." The Corporation and district officials have been identifying around 3,500 to 4,000 suspected Covid cases every month through this system which has been in place since August, he added.
The Gandhinagar Collectorate and Corporation have collectively managed 1,000 Covid beds in and aroundGandhinagar city . This includes both government and private hospitals.
According to Arya, along with patients from Gandhinagar city, they also admit patients from neighbouring cities and towns including Ahmedabad. "Of 559 beds we counted, around 200 patients are mainly from Ahmedabad and other places," he added.
Police and officials are carrying out a flag march to create awareness regarding Covid and its safety guidelines. They have also alerted chiefs of the four nagarpalikas to take strict action against the violators.
