Spanish state broadcaster RTVE is finalising plans to launch a new streaming player for the domestic market in 2021, reports local daily ABC, citing the company’s content director Fernando Lopez Puig. “We plan to launch next year a new and different platform, RTVE Play, containing Playz and our series,” said the executive, referring to its existing Playz platform for younger viewers and the ‘A la Carta’ service with all RTVE's remaining programming. The aim would be to compete with the Atresplayer Premium and Mitele Plus OTT players of commercial rivals Atresmedia and Mediaset, said the report, with RTVE Play also including exclusive content that may not end up on the state broadcaster’s linear channels.
Earlier this year, the company rolled out its international OTT platform, also called ‘RTVE Play’, throughout North and South America following a trial launch in Panama. The service currently costs USD 4.99 a month for premium and on-demand content on up to 3 devices at the same time and already has over 300,000 subscribers.
