The government of Buenos Aires City has recently declared that the capital will re-open its borders to the national and international visitors for tourism from December 2020.

In a statement on its official website, the City Hall has confirmed the news explaining a “comprehensive” testing system would be implemented to keep an eye on the health of visitors.

Argentina has recorded 1.4 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 so far, with around 37,000 fatalities. Daily caseloads and deaths are gradually going down – on Monday, only 4,625 cases of infections were registered, with 120 lost lives.

The City government headed by Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, have explained that visitors will arrive by air, river, by long-distance bus or coach, train or private vehicle. Also, tourists as well as locals returning to the city will not be required to stay in isolation upon arrival.

In two weeks time from now on December 8th, the first run of testing operations will start, followed by installations at various bus terminals and in the Costanera Sur. Within 24 hours of arrival, the ones coming by private vehicles will have to take a Covid-19 test.

“In coordination with the national government, the plan includes different testing instances to guarantee the care of international tourists (as of December 15) and national tourists (as of December 8), and residents of the City,” said a statement.

If the test comes back negative, with results ready within 24 hours, then those will have to go into isolation. “With regard to arrivals by air in Ezeiza [international airport], as from December 15, the City will launch an operation to test national and international tourists and residents” as they enter the country, said the government.

As of now, nationalities of all countries will be allowed to enter, however, given that the national government has only approved entry from neighboring countries to date.

“Currently, arrivals from Chile, Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay are enabled exclusively by air. Tourists from Uruguay can enter by air and river,” City Hall clarified in its statement.
