Odisha proposes centre to set up second AIIMS at Sundargarh

Bhubaneswar, Nov 25 (UNI) Odisha government has proposed the Union government to set up a second AIIMS for the state.
In a letter to Union Health and Family Welfare Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy proposed that the second AIIMS be established in Sundergarh in Western Odisha to provide tertiary care to a large number of tribal population in the area.
“We have learnt that a second AIIMS has been established in Bihar and a similar proposal is under consideration in another state, the Chief Secretary said in his letter.
In view of the health care requirement of Odisha, it is proposed that a second AIIMS may be considered for western Odisha in Sundargarh district, he said.
Currently, Odisha has a fully functional AIIMS in Bhubaneswar, which has emerged as one of the leading AIIMS in the country in terms of medical education and quality health care, Mr Tripathy said.
The Chief Secretary said the infrastructure for college and Hospital is readily available in Sundergarh.
As a CSR initiative, an MOU has been signed between the Odisha government and NTPC to establish a medical college and hospital.
The construction of the project has been completed and the equipment procurement process is going on. The hospital is designed for 500 beds and the college will be adequate enough to have 100 strength in MBBS.
Mr Tripathy said the location is easily accessible through road, railway and Air and requested the Union Secretary to consider the proposal.
