ICG seizes arms, drugs transferred from Pak vessel to Lankan boat, 6 arrested

Thoothukudi, Nov 25 (UNI) In a mid sea operation, the Indian Coast Guard
(ICG) on Wednesday impounded a Sri Lanka-registered boat smuggling
heroin and arms after transferring it from a Pakistan dhow in the high seas
on the international border.
The boat was impounded off Thoothukudi coast near the Indian border.
Defence sources said here that the ICG ship “ICGS Vaibhav” seized the Sri
Lankan vessel “Shenaya Duwa” during a nine-day anti-smuggling operation
that began on November 17.
Around 100 kg heroin packed in 99 packets, 20 small boxes of synthetic drugs,
five 9 mm pistols and ammunition, besides a Thuraya satellite phone set were
seized from the boat.
The drugs were found hidden in an empty fuel tank on board.
Six crew members of the boat, all of them Sri Lankans, were detained and
brought to Thoothukudi town for interrogation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the drugs and arms were transferred on
to the Sri Lankan vessel on the high seas by a Pakistani dhow from Karachi.
The drugs were meant to be smuggled to Western countries and Australia.
Investigations were on by multi-agency team of officials, including the Narcotics
Control Bureau to find out potential recipients of the drugs.
