Coronavirus News LIVE Updates: Today is the 246th day since India implemented a nationwide lockdown to help curb the novel coronavirus pandemic. So far, India has recorded 91,77,841 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 1,34,218 deaths. A total of 86,04,955 people have recuperated from COVID-19 so far. There are 4,38,667 active cases in the country as of date, which comprises 4.78 percent of the total caseload, the data stated. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have reported the highest number of cases. However, infections are rising rapidly in states like Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. India's recovery rate continues to rise and now stands at 93.76 percent. Globally, more than 5.87 crore people have been infected by the coronavirus and 13.95 lakh have died so far.     Philippine officials say about 60 million Filipinos are being targeted for vaccination against the coronavirus next year at a cost of more than 73 billion pesos (USD 1.4 billion) to develop considerable immunity among a majority of Filipinos. Carlito Galvez Jr., who oversees government efforts to secure the vaccines, said late Monday that negotiations were underway with four Western and Chinese pharmaceutical companies, including U.S.-based Pfizer Inc. and China's Sinovac Biotech Ltd., to secure the vaccines early next year.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 24 interacted via video conferencing with chief ministers of states that are witnessing a surge in coronavirus cases to review the COVID-19 situation. 

    The leaders attending the meeting include Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

    Coronavirus in Maharashtra LIVE updates | COVID-19 cases cross 50,000-mark in Thane city

    The COVID-19 tally in Thane district of Maharashtra has gone up to 2,24,222 with the addition of 634 new cases, an official said on Tuesday. The total number of coronavirus cases in Thane city has crossed the grim margin of 50,000 and its tally now stands at 50,131, he said.

    The death toll in the district has risen to 5,609 after 10 more fatalities were reported on Monday, he said. As of now, there are 6,548 active infection cases in the district, while 2,12,065 patients have recovered.

    COVID-19 vaccine | Serum Institute can apply for emergency use if AstraZeneca gets UK nod, says Dr Guleria

    The Serum Institute of India (SII) can apply for emergency use authorisation (EUA) of the AstraZeneca and Oxford University’s COVID-19 vaccine in India once it is approved in the UK,since it is a partner developer, Dr Randeep Guleria, Director of AIIMS, has said.

    A member of the Centre’s taskforce on vaccines, Dr Guleria said if the vaccine candidate was approved by UK authorities, SII could also apply for emergency use in India based on the same data. “The SII will have to wait for data to be authorised in the UK; based on that SII can approach Indian authorities for EUA. We can’t do that unless UK regulatory approves,” Dr Guleria told News18.

    Coronavirus in Puducherry LIVE updates | Puducherry records 52 new COVID-19 cases, tally touches 36,769

    Puducherry registered 52 fresh cases of coronavirus taking the aggregate to 36,769, while no death due to the infection was reported for the fifth consecutive day on Tuesday. The new cases were detected at the end of examination of 4,236 samples.

    The fatality and recovery rates were 1.66 percent and 96.88 percent respectively. There were 539 active cases while 35,621 patients recovered and were discharged so far from health facilities. The toll in the union territory remained 609 as no fresh fatalities were reported today.
