Five people have died and two have been injured after unknown gunmen fired shots in Sihlanu Avenue, near the Nyanga terminus in Cape Town.

According to police, reports from the scene suggest seven people were sitting in a taxi when gunmen approached and fired numerous shots at approximately 21:30 on Monday.

"Four men between the ages of 30 and 36 died on the scene," police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said.

Three others were rushed to hospital, where one later succumbed to gunshot wounds.

Potelwa said a team of investigators is hard at work pursuing leads.

"The motive for the incident is believed to be taxi conflict related," she added.

The latest shooting comes after seven people, including a wheelchair-bound woman, were injured in a shooting at the Cape Town taxi rank in the CBD on Monday.

Police have since bolstered deployments at potential hotspots.

Cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened for investigation.
