1.40 kg gold worth Rs 73.12 lakh seized by Customs, One arrested

Chennai, Nov 24 (UNI) Officials of the Customs Air
Intelligence Unit (AIU) on Tuesday seized 1.40 kg
gold valued at Rs 73.12 lakh and arrested a woman
who arrived from Dubai at the Anna International
airport here on Tuesday.
A release from the office of the Commissioner of
Customs said based on intelligence that gold was
likely to be smuggled by concealing in aircraft and
also by lady passengers arriving by Indigo flight
from Dubai, three women passengers Uma Kolusu
Beevi (49), Mahariba Beevi (51), both from Pudukottai,
and Gunasundari Vijayaragavan (35) of Madurai, were
intercepted at the exit on suspicion of carrying gold.
On their personal search, six packets of gold paste
(3 each) were recovered from inside waist line of
petticoats of two ladies wearing sarees and five
packets were recovered from inside the belt area
and zip area of jeans worn by the third lady
passenger.
In all 11 packets of gold paste weighing 689 grams
were recovered from which 604 grams gold of 24 K
purity valued at Rs.31.41 lakhs was recovered and
seized under the Customs Act.
Mahariba Beevi was arrested as she had an earlier
offence registered against her.
On rummaging of aircraft, a cloth bag was recovered
from the hollow pipe under one of the seats. On opening
it, five gold cut bits wrapped with white adhesive tape,
weighing 802 gms, valued at Rs 41.71 lakhs were
recovered and seized as unclaimed.
In all 1.40 kg gold valued at Rs 73.12 lakhs was
recovered and seized under the Customs Act.
Further investigation is under progress.
