Meeting on Understanding the issues of foreign national prisoners in India
An online community meeting on the topic “Understanding the issues of foreign national prisoners in India” was held on 20th November 2020 through Cisco Webex platform. The online meeting was jointly organised by Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) and Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI).
The online meeting highlighted the issues concerning foreign national prisoners, rights and remedies of Refugees/ Asylum Seekers in India and discussion on strengthening community response towards securing rights of foreigners in detention. Representatives of various Civil Society Organisations, media personnel, Advocates and Para Legal Volunteers participated the said online meeting.
Manipur State Legal Services Authority is the State Authority of Manipur constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 with the objective for carrying out the constitutional mandate of providing free legal aid and other allied services to the weaker section of the society, so as the opportunity for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic and other disabilities.
Whereas, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) is an independent, non-partisan, international non-governmental organisation, mandated to ensure the practical realization of human rights in the countries of the Commonwealth and has been working on issues related to foreign national prisoners in India including refugees and asylum seekers since 2009 as a part of its work on access to justice and prison reforms.
