Anti-Bru settlement movement in Tripura widens communal divide

Agartala, Nov 23 (UNI) The ongoing tension in Kanchanpur and Panisagar sub-divisions of North Tripura after the death of two persons during agitation against state government’s plan of settlement of displaced Brus of Mizoram here has spread across Kumarghat sub-division of Unokoti district yesterday.
At least three vehicles and a motorbike were burnt down and seven persons, including five policemen were injured at Demdum on Fatikroy-Kamalpur road by the agitating neighbours of fireman Biswajit Debbarma, who was killed in a mob attack at Agnipasa village of Panisagar two days ago immediately after one of the agitator Srikanta Das (46) was killed in police firing on NH-8.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Northern Range) L Darlong said the situation in the districts is under control and sufficient forces have been deployed in the locations.
“The discussion with JMC leaders is going on over lifting of strike and possible solution of the impasse. The scheduled meeting of Social Welfare Minister Santana Chakma and others was not held and it is scheduled today,” he added.
Meanwhile, the scheduled meeting of JMC leaders today with the Chief Minister has been deferred.
The Joint Movement Committee (JMC), comprising Bengalis and Mizos, who have been agitating for the last eight days against settlement of Brus, accused scion of the erstwhile royal family of Tripura Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, a few leaders of ruling BJP’s alliance partner IPFT and some tribal social organisations of widening ethnic divide by their communal speeches and terming Bengalis as ‘Bangladeshis’.
Meanwhile, Joint NGOs Longai Region, comprising four Bru organisations, demanded action against seven leaders of JMC accusing them of involving in murder of fireman Biswajit Debbarma during their protest against Bru rehabilitation in Kanchanpur on Nov 21 last.
They alleged that Biswajit was lynched by JMC activists in broad daylight, the footage of which is available even in social media and police should arrest them.
Extending support to JMC agitation Mizo People Convention, Manipur has criticised Tripura government for the move to rehabilitate 4600 displaced Bru families of Mizoram in Tripura.
They said, “The attitude of Tripura government is biased”. They held the state government responsible for the death of Srikanta Das in police firing and urged to settle the dispute considering the sentiments of the people of Kanchanpur.
“While the state government is trying to rehabilitate displaced Brus, it turned a blind eye towards the settlement of 81 Mizo families from six villages of bordering locations in 1997 and 650 Bengali families from 10 villages in 2000. Such attitude of the government is uncalled for and unfortunate,” Mizo People Convention, Manipur stated in a press release.
According to reports, bodies of deceased Srikanta Das and Biswajit Debbarma were cremated early this morning in their respective villages under high security.
The body of Srikanta was taken to his village at Dasda in Kanchanpur at around 2230 hrs after a seven hours long procession.
The body of Biswajit was reached to his village from Agartala late evening.
The agitated people of Biswajit’s village resorted to serious vandalism and destroyed the vehicles that drove Biswajit’s body home.
The fire brigade vehicle was demolished; a local motorcycle also faced the mob fury and was reduced to pieces.
Later, the locals organized a big rally and after resorted to attack on security personnel when prevented and five policemen and two civilians were injured.
The BJP’s ally in the government IPFT has demanded Rs 20 lakh for the families of Srikanta and Biswajit who died during the violent clashes that erupted at Panisagar on Saturday last.
The party President and Revenue Minister of the state N C Debbarma said, “We want that each of the bereaved families who lost their beloved ones in the violence should be given Rs 20 lakh each as compensation and to keep peace and tranquility intact Nagarik Suraksha Mancha and Mizo convention leaders should be arrested.”
