Cyclone ‘NIVAR’ likely to cross Tamil Nadu & Puducherry coast on Nov 25: IMD

The India Meteorological Department forecasts that the potential cyclone NIVAR is likely to move northwestwards and cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on Wednesday afternoon.

The low pressure NIVAR is located 520 km away from Chennai and 500 km from Karaikal. Tonight may be light drizzle and it will start raining on Tuesday as the cyclone comes closer to the coast. The intensity of rains might increase on Wednesday.

Villupuram, Cuddalore, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to have heavy rain. Winds may pick up along the coast from Tuesday onwards, with an intensity of 110 kmph gusting up 120 kmph on Wednesday evening.

As heavy rainfall has been predicted, six teams of National Disaster Relief Force have arrived Cuddalore district to assist in relief measures.The IMD warned the fishermen not to venture into sea between November 22-25th.

In the meantime Puducherry Chief Minister Narayanasamy has convened a meeting, in the presence of Revenue Minister Shajahan today in State Emergency Operation Centre, to discuss about the preparedness and Modus Operandi to face Heavy rain – Cyclone – NIVAR, likely to hit Puducherry.

Minister Kamalakannan also conducted a separate meeting at Karaikal today. District collector Arjun Sharma, SSP Niharika bhat and other department officials participated. Following the meeting Minister Kamalakannan informed the press that a 40 member team of National Disaster Relief Force will come to karaikal tomorrow.
