Out of 1273 cases of acid attack across the country, 799 victims were not compensated. Now the National Commission for Women has asked the states to give immediate attention in such cases. As of 20 October, compensation was given in only 474 cases across the country.
The Women's Commission asked the states to take immediate care in such cases
The Commission discussed this issue in an e-meeting with representatives and nodal officers from 24 states and union territories. Commission Chairman Rekha Sharma expressed concern over the non-compensation of acid attack victims. He requested the nodal officers to uphold the schemes and laws that help the victims in case of attacks, such as NASA's Compensation Scheme for Women. Under this scheme, compensation can be given from three to eight lakh rupees according to the severity of the case.
Sharma said that the number of updated cases on the Commission's Management Information System (MIS) is not correct. Because they do not match the events in the states. He has taken up the matter with the chief secretaries of states and union territories where nodal officers have not been appointed to record the acid attack data on MIS. According to the data, in 1273 out of 726 cases, states have provided medical aid.
