Meghalaya pays homage to Gogoi

Shillong, Nov 23 (UNI) The demise of veteran Congress leader and former Assam Chief
Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday was mourned across the state, even as chief minister
Conrad K Sangma paid homage to the memory of the ‘gentleman politician’.
“Pained to learn about former Assam CM, Tarun Gogoi's passing. He was a tall leader,
respected across party lines and adored for his immeasurable contributions towards the
cause of Assam and the Northeast. His demise will create a huge vacuum in the political
arena of the North East. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May his
soul rest in eternal peace,” the Chief Minister tweeted.
Former Chief Minister and current Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly,
Mukul Sangma, who had close connection with Late Gogoi, also expressed his
condolences and paid rich tributes to the veteran Congress leader.
“With his long innings in public life, he had immensely contributed for the progress and
prosperity of Assam in particular and the NE region in general. One of the tallest leaders
the region has produced, the nation has been privileged to be served by him - the services
rendered by him which cannot be quantified will be long cherished by one and all,” Mukul
Sangma tweeted.
Meghalaya Power Minister James Sangma also tweeted, "Saddened to hear the demise
of former Assam CM, Sh. Tarun Gogoi Ji. He was a visionary and a leader who contributed
immensely to the welfare of the state of #Assam. His death is a big loss to the country & NE. Condolences to his family & loved ones. May his soul rest in peace."
Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader, Vincent H.Pala took to microblogging
site Twitter to pay his tribute to the veteran leader.
"Saddened to know the death of former Assam CM @tarun_gogoi. His contribution to the
nation will be always remembered. He took Assam on the path of progress. Will cherish the
interactions I had with him. My deepest condolences to @GauravGogoi & the entire family.
May his soul RIP," Pala tweeted
Former home minister of the State and Congress leader RG Lyngdoh tweeted: “Blessed
to have known this great son of Assam. My heartfelt condolences to his near and dear ones.
May God reward him abundantly”.
Late Gogoi had visited Shillong on several occasions as Chief Minister of Assam and had
also held discussions with Chief Ministers of Meghalaya on resolving the vexed boundary
issue between the two neighbouring States.
“He had inaugurated new buildings of the Assam House at Stoneyland and the Assam
PWD Guest House at Barik in the city during his tenure as chief minister of Assam,”
recalls a retired senior official in the State PWD.
