GUWAHATI: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Saturday said the implementation of the all-important Clause 6 of the Assam Accord is the only way to save the identity of the people of Assam.
Speaking at the celebration of the first foundation year of the Asom Chatra Parishad, AGP’s student wing, Atul Bora said anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests have been used as a platform to float new parties and become MPs and MLAs. “AGP does not betray the community. The Centre has told us that Clause 6 will be implemented. To save our identity and community, the Clause 6 implementation is a must. Hence, we have chosen this path to rescue our community,” Bora added.
The high-powered committee on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which was constituted by the Union ministry of home affairs in July 2019, had submitted its report to chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on February 25. The report recommended numerous reservations for “Assa
mese people”, like reserving 80-100% of Assam’s seats in the Parliament and the same proportion in the assembly and local bodies.
Bora, without naming any political parties, said no regional unit can compete with AGP in the assembly elections and asked all members of AGP to lead the party and work on war footing for next year’s polls. “We had opposed the CAA and were fighting it legally in the Supreme Court. Those who protested by burning tyres thought that if the agitation continues for a long
er time, they can form the government like AGP did in 1985. They were just trying to become ministers, MLAs and MPs,” Bora said, hinting towards the two newly-formed political parties of AasuAJYCP and KMSS.
Speaking about an alliance with BJP, Bora said discussion will be held within the party and nothing will be shared with the media as of now.
Around 500 people took part in a bike rally organised by AGP in Guwahati to mark the first Foundation Day of Assam Chatra Parishad.
