Drive to catch strays begins in Patiala

The Municipal Corporation has finally started a drive to catch stray cattle in the city. Mayor Sanjeev Kumar Sharma today said the drive got delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and related activities. The MC started the drive near Hanuman Temple in the Ragho Majra area today. The civic body team caught 11 strays today that were taken to the Chaura road and the Municipal Corporation (MC) cattle sheds.

Officials at the corporation said there were nearly 500 stray cattle at the Chaura road cattle shed, which had exhausted its capacity to accommodate more strays. There were around 150 cattle roaming on roads under the MC’s jurisdiction, they added. These cattle would be shifted once a new shed was constructed, they said.

Recently, the MC held a meeting with officials of the Rural and Panchayat Development Department in which a 15.5 acre site was finalised for setting up a new cattle shed.

Officials of the MC today said city residents should not leave their stray cattle to fend for themselves on roads as they cause accidents. Last year, the corporation started work of shifting milk dairies to Ablowal village outside city, which is still underway.
