Noted Telugu poet Journo Devi Priya passes away, CM condoles

Hyderabad, Nov 21 (UNI) Noted Telugu poet, writer and Sahitya Akademi Awardee journalist Devi Priya passed away at NIMS hospital here on Saturday due to illness.

He was 71.

Mr He was survived by son and daughter.

He is known for his political satirical cartoons and poetry.

He bagged the Sahitya Akademi Award 2017, for his book Gaali Rangu.

His "Running Commentary" on contemporary politics in Udayam Telugu daily was very popular and thought provoking.

Later, he continued the Running Commentary even for couple of vernacular news channels.

Devi Priya, who was born in Tadikonda in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh, also penned several lyrics for Telugu movies , However, his song "Jambhal Bhari Bhai" penned for Maa Bhoomi was very popular.

He authored several books including Gareebi Geetaalu, Amma Chettu Chepa Chiluka and others.

During his journalism stint, Devipriya was instrumental in making noted Telugu poet Sri Sri to write his autobiography.

Meanwhile in a message, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao mourned the death of well-known poet, writer, journalist and Central Sahitya Academy award winner Devipriya.

The CM said Devipriya through his writings, poetry and columns tried to enhance the social awareness.

The CM said among the works of Devipriya, “Gali Rangu” stands apart as a representative work of his caliber as a writer.

Mr.Rao conveyed his condolences to members of the bereaved family.

Various media associations also expressed shock and grief over the sudden demise of Devipriya.
