ISL 2020-21, NorthEast United vs Mumbai City Highlights: NorthEast United came up with a resilient performance against the revamped Mumbai City and defeated them by 1-0 in the second match of the ISL 2020/21 campaign at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco on Saturday.
Despite Mumbai’s bright start with a lot of possession, everything was undone when Ahmed Jahouh was sent off for a reckless challenge on Khassa Camara. Gerard Nus’ side made the most of the man advantage and took the lead in the 49th minute through a Kwesi Appiah penalty. The Highlanders held on till the last minute to register their fourth win against the Islanders in 13 ISL meetings.
Gerard Nus' side has done it! After holding on for the final six added minutes, they have managed a rare win against Mumbai City -- only their fourth win in 13 meetings. Sergio Lobera's revamped Mumbai squad dominated the proceedings even with a man down, but they couldn't convert their chances at all. Kwesi Appiah's 49th-minute penalty does the deed for the Highlanders in the end!
Even though they have been down by a man for an entire half, Mumbai haven't stopped fighting tonight. Farukh had a shot saved and then another free kick was sent in to trouble Lambot. Six minutes are added as injury time. Can they get a point in Vasco?
So close! A cross from Farukh is messed up by Subhasish which forces Lambot to make a desperate clearance on first time as Le Fondre was meters away from the ball and almost slot it home. A big scare here for the Highlanders. Just ten minutes to go.
Goddard delivers in a perfectly weighted swinging cross from the right but a disciplined and motivated Mehta puts his body on the line to block the ball from reaching Le Fondre. Meanwhile, Ranawade and Vignesh are on for Mumbai in place of Mandar and Rakip.
After Boumous' attempt on goal ended up being wide, Golui heads inches over the goal from a corner. Mumbai are edging closer.
Nus makes two changes for NorthEast United: Machado, Lalrempuia off, Britto and Gallego on. On the other hand, Lobera makes a tactical change for Mumbai City. Ogbeche goes off for Goddard which means Adam Le Fondre will have a central role up front.
Second half resumes, and what a start by NorthEast United! Appiah scores from the spot to give his team the lead. NEU got the penalty after Fox's header was handled by Borges in the box. The Highlanders are a man up and now a goal up!
After three minutes of stoppage time, the first half comes to an end! What a thrilling finish to the half though -- a red card and a penalty appeal for a foul on Ogbeche. Mumbai dominated with the possession but with them down to ten men, advantage NEU.
OH MY! Ahmed Jahouh has been sent off for a tackle on Khassa Camara. The Moroccan got caught up in the heat of the moment and went in with his studs up. Jahouh's absence will be a cherry on the cake for NorthEast United FC. Big, big moment.
Sarthak Golui goes into the referee's book for stamping on Luis Machado's feet on the left flank. From the free kick, the Highlanders try to get something out of it. However, the resultant free-kick is fisted away by Amrinder Singh. Mumbai defence mops it easily.
After the water break concludes, Mumbai City pick up from where they left off. They are showing off their passing forte and also their counter-pressing ability. Jahouh's 25-yard free kick is deflected for a corner again. Nothing comes off the resulting set piece.
Mumbai haven't lost a single bit of control in Vasco here, as Borges tries his luck with a volley from the edge of the box now. Subhashish had to jump to be sure. Meanwhile, Raynier is down injured for Mumbai. He limps off, Farukh comes on in his place.
Mumbai City FC have the lion's share of possession so far but NorthEast United FC are not sitting down as well. Jahouh has a shot at goal, but is deflected wide for a corner. He again has a shot way outside of the box, but it's always sailing. Confident showing.
Mumbai City have started strongly, keeping a lot of the ball at their feet. Jahouh, Boumous and Mandar have been at the thick of it all, even earning a corner in the opening 10 minutes. Ogbeche and Le Fondre are yet to click for them. NEU still settling in.
