Festive week impacts Covid hosps, occupancy rates of beds on the rise

Noida/Ghaziabad: Beds in intensive care units (ICU) in both Noida and Ghaziabad’s Covid hospitals are nearly at capacity, and the overall occupancy rates are steadily increasing, as the number of cases has surged on the districts since the start of this month.
According to official data, the occupancy rate in Gautam Budh Nagar’s five private Covid hospitals is between 80% and 85%. Meanwhile, in the private Covid hospitals in Ghaziabad, the occupancy rate of ICU beds surged from 50% on November 3 to 81.2% on Friday.
Ghaziabad has 13 private hospitals with a total of 1,009 beds, of which 165 are in ICUs. As many as 134 such beds were occupied on Friday while 74 of 148 ICUs beds were occupied on November 3.
The occupancy rates in private Covid hospitals increased from 45% on November 3 to 57% on November 10 and 60% on November 13.
On Thursday, 592 (63.4%) out of 934 beds were occupied, while of 110 (74.32%) of 148 ICU beds were occupied. A day later, 678 (67.2%) of the 1,009 beds were occupied and 134 (81.2%) of 165 ICU beds were occupied.
Meanwhile, in GB Nagar, three government Covid hospitals have seen a rise in the number of patients — from 78 in October to 89 in early November to around 120-133 in the last couple of days. Nearly 40% of them are in ICUs.
Dr Sunil Dagar, COO of Yashoda Hospital, Kaushambi, said: “Our hospital is running to full capacity, including general beds and ICU beds. Even the holding area for suspected cases is full.”The winter season and pollution are precipitating factors for the increase in cases with complications, he said.
Dr Manoj Singh, director of Flores Hospital in Pratap Vihar, pointed out that primarily elderly patients are being admitted to hospitals. “Out 200-bed Covid facility is full. There has been a 100% spike in admissions from November first week to post-Diwali. Also, our ICU capacity of 125 beds is at 60% full,” said Dr Sunil Kumar, medical superintendent, Yatharth hospital in Noida extension. He added that the numbers are expected to rise for at least a month.
