Bootleg claims 11 lives in UP's Hapur

Hapur, Nov 20 (UNI) After hooch tragedy in the state capital which claimed half a dozen lives, now eleven persons have died in the past 48 hours, allegedly after consuming spurious liquor in Brajpuri and GarhMukteshwar area of Hapur district .

While the local police officials attributed the deaths to natural causes, officials of the district administration and excise department are probing the deaths. The villagers, however, blamed spurious liquor behind the deaths.

"All of the deceased had a habit of consuming alcohol but no one died after consumption of illicit liquor. We confirmed with the doctors' team," said local police. "Each person who died had underlying diseases and deteriorating health. No case of consumption of poisonous liquor has been found," the police added. Samples have been collected from local liquor shops and sent for testing.

Hapur SP Vikrant Vir said, 'We have been receiving information from the media and locals about deaths in the past 48 hours. As per our investigation, we have not found evidence of spurious liquor. Eight deaths have been identified. One of the persons died of hernia while others died of natural causes. But the incident is being probed and appropriate action will be taken.'

According to officials, the deaths took place in Ganga Nagri area and the first death was reported on Wednesday. The officials said one of the patients suffered a heart attack while another was ailing, according to their autopsy reports. The verification of other deaths is currently taking place, they said.

However, contradicting the police statement, families of the deceased claimed that the victims died after consuming poisonous alcohol. "My husband consumed alcohol two days back. After that, he had a complaint of headache and his condition worsened towards the evening. His limbs started getting numb and white foam started coming out of his mouth because no treatment was received," said Om Vati, wife of a victim. "If this poisonous liquor hadn't been selling in this area my husband would've been here," said another grieving wife.

Sarita Sharma, a relative of one of those dead, said: 'I saw his condition deteriorate as he consumed the liquor. There was foam in his mouth and he had fever. By the time he was tended to in the hospital, he died.' Other local residents said some of the victims had bought country made liquor from a nearby area and had consumed it in the last few days.
Interestingly, members of the administration too backed the police and said two persons died of cardiac diseases, one from brain stroke and one from Hernia. The remaining two victims also had underlying diseases. The administration added that the police are keeping a tight watch on the activities and selling of liquor in the area.

The Excise Department has also launched a drive against sale of illicit liquor till December 3.
