US Navy chief in Asia highlights India's role in regional stability

Washington, Nov 19 (UNI) US Navy chief in Asia on Thursday highlighted the crucial role of India as a member of the regional defense grouping 'Quad', in enhancing regional stability at a time when China is growing more assertive.
Apart from India, the United States, Australia and Japan form part of the quad.
Speaking at an online round table briefing on Thursday, the commander of the US Navy's Seventh Fleet,
Vice Admiral William Merz said "India is very committed to improving this Quad relationship, and the overall impact is just a more stable region."
Merz interacted with the press as the four powers, which routinely operate together in the Indo-Pacific, conducted the second phase of the "Malabar" exercises scheduled through Friday in the Northern Arabian Sea following the first phase from November 3 to 6.
Merz said that US-India naval cooperation has been increasing over time observing that the two countries had commenced the Malabar naval exercises way back in 1992.
Merz denied that Quad cooperation is aimed at containing any particular nation but it's purpose was to create an environment of inclusion.
The Quad has enhanced China's insecurity as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in October criticized the United States 'for aiming to build a NATO-like alliance in the Indo-Pacific region'.
