Gujarat: Night curfew to be imposed in Ahmedabad amid spike in COVID-19 cases

In the last few days, private hospitals in Gujarat has been filling up with COVID-19 patients. Reportedly, there are only 400 beds vacant for COVID-19 patients.

Gujarat government will impose a night curfew in Ahmedabad city from Friday amid a spike in COVID-19 cases, according to a top government official.

The government official said on Thursday that a curfew will remain in place between 9 pm and 6 am from November 20 to control the spread of the virus. The curfew will remain indefinitely until further orders.

Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Kumar Gupta reportedly made the announcement. According to PTI, he is the Officer on Special Duty by the Gujarat Government to oversee Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's coronavirus-related operations.

Kumar said that in the last few days beds in private hospitals have been filling up with COVID-19 patients, with only 400 of them remaining vacant in the city. Further, he said that only 2,600 beds are vacant in government-run hospitals in the city.

Gujarat right now has 12456 active COVID-19 cases, and have so far recorded 3831 deaths.

Meanwhile, capital city Delhi too witnessed a surge in the coronavirus cases since October 28, when the daily rise breached the 5,000-mark for the first time, and it crossed the 8,000-mark on November 11. The national capital recorded 7,486 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the city's infection tally to over five lakh, even as 133 more fatalities, the highest single-day death count to date, pushed the toll to 7,943, authorities said.

The highest single-day spike to date in the national capital with 8,593 cases was recorded on November 11.

Kejriwal on Thursday imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on anyone who is found not wearing a mask at a public place.
