Due to the apathy of the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, the broken stretch and uncovered manholes on Khaal Road of Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar in the Giaspura area were posing a threat to the lives of commuters. The residents blamed that development takes a back seat in the area.

The residents said the poor condition of the road was being ignored for a long time. They demanded from the civic body authorities to direct the officials concerned to ensure reconstruction of the road at the earliest.

A resident, Shiv Yadav, said: “I have been witnessing the broken stretch for a long time. I don’t know when the development will be carried out in the area. We demand from the civic body authorities should take steps to resolve the problem. The stretch should reconstructed at the earliest.”

RK Yadav of the Yadav Ahir Mahasabha said: “I often pass through the broken stretch of Khaal Road of Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar. The stretch (located in the rear side of the PSPCL office) leads to a national highway. But it is not being constructed. The covers of some sewer manholes are missing or broken due to which chances of mishaps can’t be ignored. We demand from the MC to construct the road and ensure overall development of the area as soon as possible.”

Despite repeated attempts, councillor from Ward Number 30, Jaspal Singh Giaspura could not be contacted for comments. SDO of B&R Rakesh Singla said he had no information regarding any broken Khaal Road in Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Giaspura.

MC swings into action to cover manholes

Residents said a number of manholes were uncovered in the area. Some residents had installed a pole in the uncovered manholes to alert commuters and pedestrians to avoid passing over them.

When The Tribune team brought the matter to the notice of the MC officials concerned on Tuesday, the work has been started to cover the manholes on the broken Khaal Road on Wednesday. A resident said the MC had installed manhole covers at three sites today but there are some more uncovered manholes in the area. The officials assured that the remaining manholes would be covered by Thursday.
