US to reduce troop deployment in Afghanistan

Washington, Nov 18(UNI) US acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller has announced that his country would reduce troop presence in Afghanistan and Iraq by 2,500 in each country by mid-January.
Answering Pentagon reporters on Tuesday, Miller explained the next step in what he called "President Trump's plan to bring the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to a successful and responsible conclusion and to bring our brave service members home,".
He stressed that Trump made this decision in consultation with his top national security officials and that it did not amount to a change in policy.
ABC News quoted Miller saying that he was announcing the implementation of Trump's "orders to continue our repositioning of forces from those two countries."
Announcement regarding drawing down the number of US troops in Afghanistan was expected however many have questioned the wisdom of this move.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday said that “the price for leaving too soon or in an uncoordinated way could be very high,” referring to recent reports on Trump administration’s plan to reduce its presence in Afghanistan.
While Afghanistan's Defense Ministry on Monday said that the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces are capable of defending the country in case there is a withdrawal of international forces, however several Afghan experts have said the withdrawal should be carried out in a responsible manner.
Countries in the region, including Iran, Pakistan and Russia have also asked for a responsible withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan.
