Ex-Min Ebrahim Kunju's arrest politically- motivated: Chennithala

Kochi, Nov 18 (UNI) Opposition Leader in Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday alleged that the arrest of former PWD Minister VK Ebrahim Kunju was politically-motivated.
The Opposition leader said this while reacting to the arrest of former minister of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in the previous UDF ministry VK Ebrahim Kunju, by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB), in connection with the Palarivattom flyover scam.
''The corrupt CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is resorting to meaner ways to arrest UDF MLAs on bogus charges.
''These are just futile efforts to deviate the public attention from gross corruption and gold smuggling charges against the Left government. UDF is going to fight it out legally and politically,'' Mr Chennithala added.
The VACB sleuths arrested the former IUML minister from a hospital, where he was admitted. The arrest has taken place, when the state is heading for the Local Body elections in December.
The VACB team, who visited Kunju's house here this morning, was informed by his family that he was admitted in a private hospital last night.
Later, the VACB team conducted a search in his house with the help of women police officials. Afterwards, the VACB reached the hospital and arrested him this morning.
Former Chief Minister and AICC General Secretary Oommen Chandy alleged that the Left Government hatched a conspiracy to arrest the former minister.
The Opposition leader alleged that VACB arrested the former minister, following Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's insistence to tarnish the image of the Congress-led UDF, during the Local Bodies polls.
In February last, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan signed the VACB file, which was forwarded by the state government, seeking his approval for a probe against the role of Mr Kunju in the flyover scam.
The flyover, built in 2016 at a cost of Rs 47.7 crore, was closed after cracks appeared on it. According to a study report, the flyover is in a precarious state, with chinks being found in 97 girders. Though foundation and pillars of the structure are intact, bearings and concrete spans were in damaged condition.
The flyover was built during the tenure of previous Congress-led UDF Government. The project was completed at a total cost of Rs 72.6 crore, including the cost of land acquisition. The flyover covers a distance of 639 metres.
There were allegations that Mr Kunju intervened to release an amount of Rs 8.25 crore with a meager interest of seven per cent in advance to the building contractor for the flyover work, causing an yearly loss of Rs 57 lakh to the state government.
Former Public Works Secretary to Sooraj, former KITCO MD Sumit Goyal and RBDCK company GM P D Thankachan were also arrested in connection with the case earlier.
