We love the Ford Focus because it’s a great driver’s car. True, it isn’t what it once was, but then who is? It doesn’t disappoint for space, either, although it lacks the premium levels of fit and finish found in its rivals here.

How good is the Kia Ceed these days? Very. It’s a great effort in an intensely competitive segment. The Ceed has new-found levels of ride and handling sophistication and plenty of space for your family of four – or even five if you have a close friend in your bubble.

Gone is the rear-wheel-drive craziness of the original BMW 1 Series, and in its place is this suaver, calmer and roomier hatch. But don’t worry: although front-wheel drive, it’s still good fun, and to some eyes it’s better looking too, so you won’t want to park it around the corner.
