Prez describes JNU as blend of inclusion, diversity, excellence

New Delhi, Nov 18 (UNI) President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday lavished praise on Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), saying that it represents a blend of "inclusion, diversity and excellence" and this Indianness is its legacy.

"Students coming from all parts of India and from all strata of society study in JNU in an atmosphere of equal opportunity for excellence. Students aspiring for very different career paths come together at JNU. The University represents the blending of inclusion, diversity and excellence," he said, while addressing the fourth annual convocation of JNU through a video message.

He said all shades of Indian culture were reflected in JNU, pointing to the names of buildings, hostels, roads and facilities on the campus drawn from the Indian heritage. "This represents a cultural and geographical picture of India at its best. This Indianness is JNU's legacy and strengthening it is it's duty," added Mr Kovind.

Referring to the excellent faculty of JNU, the President said it had been encouraging free debate and respect for difference in opinion.

In an official statement here, the President said, 'Students are treated as partners in learning, which is how it should be in higher education. The University is known for vibrant discussions, which also take place outside the classrooms, in the cafeterias and dhabas at all hours.'

Speaking about the country's glorious past of teaching and research in ancient times, the President was of the view that JNU was among those select institutions of higher learning, which could reach globally comparable excellence, as existed in ancient India.

Turning to the COVID-19 pandemic, the President said today, when the world was in a state of crisis because of the pandemic, varsities like JNU should be at the forefront to develop specific hand-holding mechanisms and promote innovation among student communities.
