AHMEDABAD: At 1,281 new positive cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours ending 5pm on Wednesday, it was the highest daily tally for the state in the past 42 days.
The state also recorded deaths of eight positive patients, which was the highest daily death toll in 28 days. With the update, the total cases in
Gujarat reached 1.91 lakh, whereas the death toll reached 3,823 – giving a mortality rate of 2%. On Tuesday, Gujarat was 12th among Indian states in terms of the highest daily positive cases.
The new cases in Gujarat included 224 from Surat, 220 from Ahmedabad, 161 from Rajkot and 142 from Vadodara. It was the fourth consecutive day for
Ahmedabad city to record more than 200 daily cases, whereas Surat city recorded a jump of 14.5% in daily cases in 24 hours – from 158 to 181. For Surat city, it was a 45-day high daily tally.
The deaths included five from Ahmedabad, two from Surat and one from Patan. It was the highest daily death toll for Ahmedabad city in 31 days. Ahmedabad city has recorded 69 deaths in the past 30 days.
The hospitals continued to report a high rate of occupancy on the fourth consecutive day – according to the Ahmedabad Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (AHNA) website, as of Wednesday morning, the non-requisited bed occupancy was 92.4% overall. Out of 175 ventilator beds, only 16 or 9% were available, whereas occupancy for ICU beds without ventilator was 94.5% on 366 beds available.
While the occupancy rate at Civil Hospital remained around 55% at 1200-bed
Covid0-19 hospital, the critical patients would now onwards be shifted to GCRI and IKDRC hospitals in the same campus, said senior officials. “The decision is taken in the light of the nearly-full sections of patients requiring oxygen support and ventilators,” said the official, adding that it would be after more than two months that these super-specialty hospitals would be treating Covid-19 patients again.
At Sola Civil Hospital, out of 450 beds available, 292 were occupied. All 50 ventilator beds were occupied, said the hospital authorities. With a surge in some of the northern Gujarat districts,
the Gandhinagar Civil Hospital is instructed to admit critical patients, said sources in the state health department.
With a discharge of 1,274 patients in 24 hours - the highest in seven days - the number of total discharged patients crossed 1.75 lakh figure in Gujarat. With the update, the number of active cases reached 12,457. The share of discharged patients reached 91.5%.
Gujarat carried out 54,256 tests in 24 hours, taking the total to 69.78 lakh.
