Hyderabad: Woman dies in queue waiting to apply for Rs 10k flood relief

Hyderabad, Nov 18 (UNI) A 50-year-old woman waiting in queue at a Meeseva centre to apply for Rs 10,000 flood relief from the Telangana Government, collapsed and died at Tolichowki near here on Wednesday even as the stampede-like situation prevailed at Mee Seva centres in Hyderabad and surrounding areas where thousands of persons in queued up for applying to for flood relief.
The government had announced flood relief of Rs 10,000 for every household affected by the recent heavy rains and floods.
Without maintaining COVID-19 safety norms and social distancing, a huge number of men and women, who gathered at Mee Seva Centres, the Citizen services delivery centres since early morning, stood in queues to apply for the aid.
However, all the citizen services delivery centres were closed to receive the applications from the flood affected families following the instructions from the government to put on hold the registration and distribution of relief to flood affected families in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limited till declaration of the GHMC election results.
The government officials had earlier claimed to have disbursed more than Rs 470 crore to 4,75,871 families in GHMC and adjoining municipalities.
However, many people in the affected areas complained that they have not received the aid.
Earlier in the day, the Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) asked the Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, to put on hold the registration and distribution of relief to flood-affected families in GHMC limits as it was “attracting the Model Code of Conduct” and was “likely to influence the electors”.
With the issue of GHMC election notification, the Model Code of Conduct came into force from Tuesday and will be in force till declaration of election results, the SEC added.
The GHMC elections will be held on December 1 while counting will take place on December 4.
Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao had announced on Sunday that those who have not received the aid can apply through Mee Seva centres.

He said the officials concerned would visit the houses of the applicants and the amount will be credited in the bank accounts of those eligible.
From Monday, the Mee Seva centres were flooded with applicants.
