We *should* be masters at not touching our face by now.

Though we've been disciplining ourselves since March, many of us probably catch ourselves finicking with our masks or picking at maskne now and then.

At a time when keeping fingers (and the devices we hold like extra limbs) germ-free is more crucial than ever, a UV sanitizing box is genius addition to the counter beside the door. The germ zapping process should only take around 10 minutes, depending on the sanitizer. UVC radiation can be effective in killing 99.9% of bacteria on surfaces, including the water droplet-borne germs that spread viruses like the flu or the pesky common cold.

The FDA's website notes UVC light is a known disinfectant, but whether it can neutralize COVID-19 on surfaces is largely unknown. One study highlighted by the FDA shows UVC light was effective at neutralizing COVID-19 droplets in the air, however another study specifically found that PhoneSoap was ineffective against SARS (a cousin of COVID-19). When considering buying a UVC device to zap your phone, keep in mind that you are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 through the respiratory system versus contaminated surfaces. Mashable's Rachel Kraus also writes:

"PhoneSoap says it can neutralize germs that transmit the common cold or flu, and work on other pathogens. With respect to novel coronavirus, PhoneSoap said that the virus' characteristics are similar to one type of flu virus that it does fight off. But they did not want to overstate the product's capabilities."

Trying to think past the pandemic, frequently-touched personal items like phones and AirPods will always be breeding grounds for bacteria. COVID or not, a UV sanitizer could be the nag for hygiene that we all need.

Three stellar UV sanitizing boxes are on sale ahead of Black Friday: Grab the iconic PhoneSoap, a chic catchall from Sonix, or a sterilizer-turned-Qi-charger from Samsung for less than $40.

PhoneSoap Basic UV-C Sanitizer — $34.99 (save $15)

PhoneSoap was doing the UV sanitizing thing before it was cool. Going with the Basic UV-C Sanitizer over the PhoneSoap Go or PhoneSoap Pro saves you anywhere from $44.96 to $84.96, but still locks down double-sided sanitation from two UV bulbs (minus the helpful timer lights on the outside). This PhoneSoap is just under nine inches long, can fit most iPhones with a PopSocket still on, and also acts as a charger.

This deal applies to MyBestBuy members only — a free, no-fuss membership that you can sign up for in seconds.

Samsung Qi Wireless Charger and UV Sanitizer — $39.99 (save $10)

Paranoid consumers spoke and Samsung listened. It joined the UV sanitation fold in July 2020, and in true tech giant fashion, casually incorporated a Qi charger. Pressing the button on the front kickstarts the 10-minute sterilization period and can wirelessly fast-charge your phone at the same time. Sunglasses and phones as large as the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G or Galaxy Fold will fit.

Sonix Beyond UV+O3 Sanitizing Box — $36 (save $24)

Need a gift for a teenage girl? Here's a winner. Phone case company Sonix has applied its chic patterns to a UV+O3 Sanitizing Box (O3 being an environmentally-friendly ozone that offers extra protection by reaching under shadows). This stylish desk ornament doubles as a catchall for all the things you can't leave the house without. Use code BF40 to apply a 40% off Black Friday discount. Plain patterns are $36 on sale, while fancier textures like tortoise shell and black croc skin are $45.
